At the height of the Battle of Britain on 16th August 1940, Flight Lieutenant James Nicholson was ordered to patrol the skies above Southampton, flying Hawker Hurricane P3576, GN A of 249 Sqn, based at nearby Boscombe Down. His aircraft was struck by cannon fire, wounding him and causing a fire. As Nicholson began to abandon his aicraft, he spotted another enemy fighter and shot it down,
