The pieces explore elements of Chinese and Western traditions though most are rooted in a traditional national style derived from Chinese opera or folk music. They evoke characteristic Chinese instrumental sonorities, especially percussion gongs, drums, chimes and bells from a variety of source material including Beijing Opera and ballads.
